Part 2: Styles of Meal Service

The “style of service” refers to the manner of organizing, preparing, and serving food at mealtime.

The style you choose will determine:

  • How you organize the eating area
  • How food is prepared and served
  • The type of serving utensils needed
  • The level of interaction between adults and children during mealtime

Two examples of meal service styles are buffet and picnic. You may have experienced one of these in the past. We will take a closer look at these two styles of meal service later in the module.

For now, let us look at family style meal service. It is recommended for serving children and for creating a pleasant mealtime environment.
